Caroline was born in 1831 in Hunslet, Leeds, Yorkshire.¹ Caroline's father was James Roberts and her mother was Harriet Richardson. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Roberts and Ann King; her maternal grandmother was Mary Stead. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, William, Matilda and Mary. She was the third youngest of the six children.
