John was born on November 16th, 1836 in Nether Witton, Northumberland.¹ John's father was Thomas Farrer and his mother was Anne Gibson. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Farrer and Elizabeth Wanlace; his maternal grandparents were Luke Gibson and Ann Dixon or Dickson. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Luke, Thomas, Isabella, Anne, Mary and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the seven children.
