Joseph was born in 1904 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.¹ Joseph's father was Joseph Rose SHILTON and his mother was Sarah Jane SMITH. His paternal grandparents were George SHILTON and Ann ROSE. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Cyril, George, Jack, Leonard, Gertrude, Elsie, Edna, Gladys, Winifred, Kath and Marjorie. He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
