Cyril was born in 1907 in Atherstone, Warwickshire.¹ Cyril's father was Joseph Rose SHILTON and his mother was Sarah Jane SMITH. His paternal grandparents were George SHILTON and Ann ROSE. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, George, Jack, Leonard, Gertrude, Elsie, Edna, Gladys, Winifred, Kath and Marjorie. He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
