William was born in 1838 in Stow-On-The-Wold, Gloucestershire and his baptism took place on July 22nd, 1838 in Parish Church, Upper Slaughter, Gloucester.1 2  William's father was Richard LONG and his mother was Elizabeth SMITH.  His paternal grandparents were John Henry LONG and Ann TAYLOR; his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Hannah <UNKNOWN>. He had two brothers and three sisters, named George, John, Elizabeth, Mary and Joyce.  He was the second youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 37 in 1875 in West Bromwich, Stafford.3
