Thomas was born in 1871 in Stockingford, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.  Thomas' father was William CLARKE and his mother was Mary Ann ROBINSON.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas CLARKE and Sarah <UNKNOWN>; his maternal grandfather was William ROBINSON. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Sarah, Ellen and Ann.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Elizabeth.
