George was born in 1890 in Stockingford, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.  George's father was William CLARKE and his mother was Mary Ann ROBINSON.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas CLARKE and Sarah <UNKNOWN>; his maternal grandfather was William ROBINSON. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Sarah, Ellen and Ann.  He was the youngest of the six children. He had a half-sister named Elizabeth.
