Sterling was born on October 3rd, 1946 in Deering, MO.1   Sterling's father was Willy Pete Smith and his mother is Blanche Berry.  His paternal grandparents were Cleophus (R-Cliff) Smith and Beatrice Corpatts`; his maternal grandparents were Elbert Berry and unk. He had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Willie, Perry, Jay, Cleophaus, Buck, Lee, Blane, Willa, Louise, Minerva, Christine, Dot, Alice and Patricia. He had a half-brother named Mattie.  He died at the age of 63 on April 7th, 2010.1
