John was born in 1624.  John's father was John Whitney and his mother was Elinor.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Whitney and Mary Bray. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Richard, Nathaniel, Thomas, Jonathan, Benjamin, Joshua, Caleb and Mary.
