John was born on January 4th, 1789.  John's father was Ebenezer Watson and his mother was Anna Whitney.  His paternal grandparents were Eliphalet Watson and Elizabeth Phinney; his maternal grandparents were Nathan Whitney and Elizabeth Melcher. He had six brothers and a sister, named Stephen, Joseph, Samuel, Stephen, William, Nathan and Elizabeth.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
