Phyillis was born in 1868 in Edisto Island, South Carolina.  Phyillis' father was August Deas and her mother was Lydia  Perry   (Deas).  Her maternal grandfather is Perry and her maternal grandmother was Venus Perry. She had five brothers and six sisters, named William, Edward, Isiah, Benjamin, Christopher, Grace, Rachel, Rebecca, Mary Mary, Elsie and Elvera .
