James was born in 1839.1  James' father was Epes Young and his mother was Rhoda Woodbury. He had a sister named Sarah.  He was the younger of the two children. He had three half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Epes, George, Albert, Deborah, Nancy, Nancy, Mercy, Eliza, Lucy and Sarah.
