Samuel was born in September 1920 in Leyburn, North Yorkshire.1 Samuel's father was Henry Whitling and his mother was Ellen Salhouse Tillett. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Whitling and Elizabeth Graham; his maternal grandparents were Frederick Salhourse Tillett and Mary Ann Gross. He had two sisters named Millicent and Violet. He was the youngest of the three children.-
