John was born on February 1st, 1829.  John's father was Robert Daines and his mother was Mary N Newby.  His paternal grandparents were William Daines and Esther Hudson; his maternal grandparents were James Newby and Mary Rudd. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Robert, William, James, Esther, Mary, Rebecca, Frances, Sarah, Elizabeth, Ann, Susanna and Mariah.  He was the second youngest of the thirteen children.
