Matilda was born on July 23rd, 1879 in Friockheim, Angus, Scotland. Matilda's father was William Boyle and her mother was Mary Meffan Hardie. Her maternal grandparents were Patrick Hardie and Betty Greig. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Charles, James, Stewart, John, Elizabeth, Grace and Jean. She was the youngest of the nine children.-
