Sarah's father was Moses Payne and her mother was Judith Beard. Her paternal grandparents were John Payne Sr. and Sarah Ellis; her maternal grandparents were Edward Beard and Sarah Walker. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Oaty, Robert, Lemuel, Green, Payne, Joseph, William, James, Matilda and Mary. She was the youngest of the eleven children.
