Mary was born in 1827 in Franklin Co., Virginia.¹

Mary's father was Moses Payne and her mother was Judith Beard. Her paternal grandparents were John Payne Sr. and Sarah Ellis; her maternal grandparents were Edward Beard and Sarah Walker. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named Oaty, Robert, Lemuel, Green, Payne, Joseph, William, James, Matilda and Sarah. She was the tenth oldest of the eleven children.
