According to Coll. Hist. Staffs. (Wm. Salt) 1933, pt. 2: 135, "Sir William de Stafford, the father of Gundrada, was of Bramshall, son and heir of Sir William de Stafford, the son, by a first marriage [this is confusing, as I have him as a yngr. son of Hervey and Millicent.  [Note by JW: I also have William I de Stafford as younger son of Hervey & Millicent]], of Hervey Bagot who married Millicent de Stafford, the heiress of the Stafford Barony."  The article continues that the 2nd William md. #1 Ermentrude, daughter and heir of Robert fitzWalkeline and Alina his wife. Ermentrude [sic. I think she meant William de Stafford] is said to have married by 1253 as 2nd wife Alda/Auda de Vernon.  The article implies that Wm. had only dtrs. by Ermentrude and the male line continued at Sandon until extinction.

The article is "The De Stafford and Fitz Walkeline Families."

Coll. His. Staffs. (Wm Salt) 1917/18: 9-10 has more on these Williams:

Sir William de St. of Sandon and Bramshall and of Amblecoe was b. ca. 1255. He was MP for Staffs. 1290, 1298, 1296, 107/8, 1311/12, 1313, 1318.He was the son and H. of Sir William de S. of Bramshall, d. 1252/8, by his 2ndwife Auda (d. 1276/9) widow of Hugh Beauchamp of Bedford and eldest dtr. of Vernon of Sandon. The MP married before 1272, Cecily, dtr. and h. of Robert Waureof Amblecot.  He is the stammvater [I think this is German for ultimate ancestor?] of the Staffords of Sandon; of Seile, Derby.; of Grafton, Worc.; of Southwick, znoHants.; of Hook, Dorset; of Huncote; of Frome, Somerset; etc. He d. after 1339.

His son William Jr. married Isabel Stafford, dtr. and h. of Robert de Stafford and Gundred de Stafford, dtr. of Sir William and his first wife Ermentrude fitzWalkeline.  They had five sons: James, John (of Bramshall), Edmund,William, and Walter.

"The father, Sir William de Stafford 9c. 1225-58), hadmarried first Ermentrude, daughter and co-heiress of William FitzWalkelin, before 1252; and was the son and heir of Sir William de Stafford (c. 1195-1240), who was himself the second son of the whole blood of Hervy Bagot of Bramshall and melicent de Stafford, the heiress of the Stafford Barony. So that our Sir William, the first M.P. for Staffordshire, was second cousin to the contemporary Lord Stafford, and his grandsons, Sir James and Sir John, were fourth cousins ofthe great Earl Stafford whose sister and daughter they respectively married."

By the way, it is said that a daughter of the Sir John and Margaret Staffordmarriage married a Trussell. Can anyone confirm or disprove this?

He m. Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Sir John Hardrishall, knt. of Hardrishall, in the county of Warwick, by Maud Mussenden, an heiress, and thereby became possessed of divers manors."

BARONY OF MOUNTJOY (I)

WALTER BLOUNT, son and heir, born circa 1420, "in the hundred of Appletree" [co. Derby], probably at Barton Blount. He was a Knight of the Shire for Derby 1447 and later to 1460. In 1449 he was bailiff for life of the wapentakes of Morleston and Litchurch, co. Derby, and J.P. (except from 1456-60). During the disturbances at the time of the King's insanity in 1454, he was under suspicion of taking part in plots, and indeed he became a Yorkist; but he was pardoned in December 1459, though deprived of his bailiwick. On 22 October 1460, a few days after Richard, Duke of York, asserted his title to the Crown and was in power, Blount was made treasurer of Calais, being continued in that office in 1461, and K.B. before the Coronation of Edward IV, 4 March 1460/1. In October of that year he was laying siege to the castle of Hammes, near Calais, and in July 1463 was a member of the embassy sent to meet the commissioners of the Duke of Burgundy at St. Omer. He was made Treasurer of England, 24 November 1464, and held the office for a little more than 15 months. On2O June 1465 he was created LORD MOUNTJOY (Dominus de Mountjoy), to him and the heirs male of his body, witb a fee of 20 marks, part from the town of Thurvaston and part from the profits of Derbyshire and Notts. In August 1467 he was one of the King's courtiers present in the inn of the Aichbishop of York when he surrendered the Great Seal to Edward IV. In 1468 he was allowed to ship wool free of customs in consideration of the large sum of money then due to him; and in the same year entered into articles to serve the King as Captain of the Army, with 60 men-at-arms and 2,940 archers, in his proposed expedition against France in aid of the Duke of Brittany, but the design being abandoned, he was againretained to serve with 1,000 men, 60 being men-at-arms, and shortly before April 1469 to serve at sea. When Edward IV was a prisoner in the hands of Warwick in August and September 1469, Mountjoy apparently was with him, for he returnedto London with the King in October. In April 1470 he and the Earl of Wiltshirewere empowered to receive the submission of rebels who had taken part in the Lincolnshire revolt in March. There does not appear to be any record of the parthe played during the short restoration (October 1470,to April 1471) of Henry VI, but his son William died of wounds received at the battle of Barnet, 14 April 1471, fighting for Edward IV. On 3 July 1471 Mountjoy took the oath of fidelity to the King's infant son Edward (born 4 November 1470) on his creation as Prince of Wales; and on 24 April 1472 he was nominated K.G. In February 1472/3 hewas a commissioner to inquire as to piratical attacks on Portuguese vessels, and in July was one of the King's Council present at the delivery of the Great Seat to Edward IV in the refectory of the Franciscan house at Stamford.

He married, 1stly, in or before 1442, Ellen, daughter of Sir John BYRON, of Clayton, near Manchester. She was buried at Elvaston. Now to the original questions.  Drakelowe is in Derbyshire, 2 miles south of Burton-on-Trent; the original Gresley is only 3 miles distant from Drakelowe.  The Stafford-Gresley connection (sharing common descent from the Toesnis) is postulated by the Gresley author, Falconer Madan, whose book 'The Gresleys of Drakelowe' (Proceedings of the Wm. Salt Archaeological Society, new ser., 1, 1898), is still the definitive work on the Gresleys, makes Peter de Gresley the agnatic fourth cousin of Johanna de Stafford, who is the daughter of SirRobert de Stafford & Gundreda; Sir Robert being son of Sir William de Stafford(& Alditha [Vernon?]), younger brother of Hervey de Stafford, 1st Baron Stafford (d. 1237).

8.SIR WALTER DE MONTGOMERY. In 1281 he was styled 'Dominus of Sudbury' which appears to havebeen the place of residence of the Montgomery heir apparent.  Succeeding his father in 1303, he made a grant of the mill at Cubley to Alan the miller [Jeayes, Derbyshire Charters, no.929]. On 22 May 1306 he was amongst those knighted with Edward, Prince of Wales. In 1308 Walter presented to Sudbury church. [Charles Cox, Churches of Derbyshire, v.3 p. 316]. Pardoned for the death of Piers de Gavaston 1313. Commissioner of Array for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1319. Summoned as a man of arms of Northamptonshire and as a knight of Derbyshire to the Great Council at Westminster 9 May 1324, and to serve in Guienne 7 January 1325 [C.Moor, Knights of Edward I, v.III p. 190]. His first wife and mother of his children is unknown. He married secondly Joan, daughter of Sir Robert de Stafford and widow of Peter de Gresley d.c 1310. She was implicated in the murder of her stepson, William de Montgomery.

"[Peter de Gresley] married Johanna, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Robert de Stafford and a lineal descendant ofthe Toenis.  Very shortly after her husband's death, she was forcibly abductedfrom her manor of Drakelowe, which had been assigned to her by her eldest son,and carried off to Swinnerton by Sir John de Swinnerton and others.  There shewas detained for a long time, and it is certainly noticeable that we hear nothing of her for some years after this event.  Justice was slow, and not till 1321-4 was Sir John brought to trial, when he produced a pardon from the King dated May 25, 1310!  However, before 1320 Johanna must have escaped, for she was then the wife of Sir Walter de Montgomery (a connexion of the Swinnertons), who died in 1322 or 1323 [RB - this date of death is incorrect].  The violence of the times can be as well gathered from the following single incident as from a catalogue of crimes.  On Sept 23, 1323, Johanna is found abetting her sons Peter and Robert de Gresley in the murder of Sir William de Montgomery, son of her late [sic] husband Sir Walter 'on the high road under the park of Seal!'

Philippa the widow of the murdered man procured the arrest of all three, but they were acquitted!  Again in 1333 she was accused of murder and again acquitted.  After these records - and they are only samples - one is not surprised to hear ofher own strong-box being broken into at Drakelowe in 1323-4.  At last in or before 1342 her turbulent life is ended.
