[David Oliver Smith.ged]<br /><br />The married daus of Sir William Booth were<br /><br />1a Elizabeth, m William Basnet, of Eaton, Denbighshire.<br />2a Dorothy, m Ralph Bunnington, of Barrowcote, Derbyshire.<br />3a Eleanor, m John Panton, Brunslip, Denbighshire, from whom descended the family of Duke of Benhall, Suffolk, ext 1732 (see Complete Baronetage and EDB).<br />4a Susan, m 1stly Sir Edmund Warren, of Poynton, Cheshire, and m 2ndly John Fitton, of the city of Chester.<br /><br />The Booths of Dunham Massey<br />The Booth family of Dunham Massey trace their ancestry back to early medieval times when their name appears in several different forms, including Bouth, Booths and Bothe. Around 1275 William de Booths had married Sibel, daughter of Sir Ralph de Brereton, in 1474 John Legh of Booths was married to Raufe Egerton, and by Tudor times, the family had married into most of the neighbouring aristocratic families. For example, Sir William Booth (1540-1579) married Elizabeth Warburton of Arley, and yet another George Booth (1515-1543) was married to Elizabeth de Trafford.<br />One daughter of the family also married into the Grey family - it was of that same family that the unfortunate Lady Jane Grey came, before she fell prey to Henry VIII's axeman. Thus the family extended their influence and power base in the county.<br />Certainly the Booths held many lands in the area around this time, as evidenced in the House of Commons Journal of the 30th July 1660 which passed "?a Bill to enable Sir George Booth Baronet to lease and sell Lands, for Payment of his Debts, and raising Portions for Advancement of his younger Children".<br />This same Sir George Booth had fought for the Parliamentarian cause during the First Civil War and was elected MP for Cheshire in May 1645. He was also elected to the First Protectorate Parliament in 1654 and was commissioned to assist the Major-Generals in Cheshire. However, he appears to have fallen out of favour when he described them as 'Cromwell's hangmen' and by 1659 was plotting with Royalists to bring about the Restoration.<br />He headed an abortive insurrection during the summer of 1659, which was easily defeated, Booth was arrested and briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London but was soon released on bail.<br />In April 1660, Booth was elected to the Convention Parliament. He was one of twelve MPs appointed to convey Parliament's invitation to Charles II to return as King. It was also granted "That the Sum of Ten thousand Pounds be conferred on Sir George Booth Baronet, as a Mark of Respect unto him, for his eminent Services and great Sufferings for the Publick". At the King's coronation in April 1661, Booth was made Lord Delamere. In the 18th century the Booths were also created Earls of Warrington.<br />It is recorded that the Dunham Massey deer park had existed in 1362 and it is known that the moat, which today partly survives as the ornamental lake, once surrounded the old Manor House, which was possibly a Norman motte and bailey castle before then.

Dr. Watson, on the occasion of Warren of Poynton presenting his claim to descent from the Earls, before Parliament. Therein can be found mention, copied from the Warren family papers, of the earliest Virginia and Maryland Warren's progenitors, I am sure of several generations of Warrens in this country.<br />"Sir Edward Warren, Knight, of Poynton, Baron of Stockport, born 1563, died 1609. High Sheriff of Cheshire, knighted in 1599 while serving in the Irish wars, who was sixteenth in lineal descent from William de Warren, second Earl of Surrey, died 1138, according to Watson's "Ancient Earls of Warren and Surrey and Their Descendants," was the immediate progenitor of several early Virginians. Sir Edward had no issue by his first wife, a daughter of Sir Edward Fitton, and married secondly, circa 1581, Anne, daughter of Sir William Davenport, of Bromall. His fifth child by this marriage was William Warren, who was in Virginia between 1633 and 1640. I have no other information of him. Sir Edward's son and heir, John Warren, of Poynton Manor, Cheshire, died 20th June, 1621; had a son John, baptised in August, 1606, who in 1642 was living in St Mary's County, Maryland and was killed in 1644 by Capt. John Warren, of Poynton, who died in 1621, had as son and heir, Edward Warren, of Poynton, born 1605, died 1667, whose third son was Colonel Humphrey Warren, born 7th June, 1632, ad planter in Charles county, Maryland, 1666, and in 1689 was appointed one of the Justices of the Quorum and Coroner, and commander of the troops of Charles county, and was a signer of the celebrated "Remonstrance" of the Maryland colonists, dated 27th March, 1689. Colonel Humphrey's will, on file at Annapolis, is dated 14th August 1689, proved 25th February 1694-5. He names his sons Notley, Benjamin, Charles, John and Humphrey; his wife Margery, and divides about 800 acres of Charles county land between them. He refers to a legacy from "the Hon'ble Thomas Notley" to his son Notley Waren. Thomas Notley, gent., was a Burgess and a member of the Lower House of Maryland and an attorney at law; will proved 3d April, 1679. What was his relationship to, or interest in Notley Warren, I do not know. Nor have I any information as to whether or not Colonel Humphrey Warren's children had issue, excepting in the case of his son, John Warren, gent., of Charles county, whose will was proved 13th February 1713-14, but he names only two daughters, Mary and Ann, and his wife Judith.<br />"The aforesaid Sir Edward Warren, of Poynton, married, thirdly, 1597-8, Susan, born 1577, died 1636, daughter of Sir William Booth, of Dunham-Massey, and had by her Lieutenant Radcliffe Warren, who was unfortunately killed in Claiborne's raid on the Isle of Kent in 1635 (I have no knowledge of his issue, if any), and Thomas Warren, some of whose descendants for several generations are traced by their wills and realty transactions. In 1735 he patented 300 acres of land in CHarles City county, Va. - 150 acres in right of his wife, Susan Greenleaf, widow of Robert Greenleaf, "an ancient planter," and 150 acres for the personal adventure of himself and two servants. He was a burgess both in James City county and Surry county as late as 1666. He had as second wife, marriage contract dated 25th September, 1654, Elizabeth, widow of Major Robert Sheppard, of Lower Chipoaks. He had sons John, Richard and Thomas, but by which wife they were is not in evidence. The son, Thomas Warren, Jr., lived in Isle of Kent, Md. (as did also his brother, Richard), and was a planter, having a farm, seat or manor called 'Poynton,' after the ancestral seat in Cheshire, and was Lieutentant in the county company of soldiers. His will, dated 19th December, 1684, proved 28th March, 1685, names his wife as "Elizabeth," but in Barton pedigrees she is called "Sarah." Susan came to America in 1620 aboard the JONATHAN with her children, Thomas age 3 years and Ann aged 22 weeks. She was 23 years old. Thomas and Susan were married in 1634. In 1635 he patented 300 acres of land in Charles City County, Virginia. Part was in Susan's name for her personal adventure. Part ws "for her former husband, Robert Greenleaf, being an ancient planter in the time of Sir Thomas dale" and the remainder in being due to Thomas for his personal adventure and transportation of two persons into Virginia, John Fonke and Ruth Whitfield.<br /><br />[David Oliver Smith.ged]<br /><br />In Thomas Warren the legitimate line of Geoffrey Plantagenet (1113 - 1151) through Matilda, Countess of Anjou to Henry II, King John, Henry III and the illegitimate line through Adelaide de Angiers to Hamelin Plantagenet and the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Earls of Surrey and Warrene are united 450 years later.<br /><br />Thomas Warren secured passage to Virginia by becoming an indentured servant of the Greenleafes, as he is listed as such on one of the logs.<br /><br />Virginia Land Patent records of 1635, show that Thomas and Susan Warren, "RELICT OF ROBERT GREENLEAFE" were deeded 300 acres of land between them.<br /><br />The following is copied from a stone in the floor of the South Transcript of Romsey Abbey:<br />Here lyeth the body of Mr. Tho. Warren, a learned, pious, and faithful minister of Christ, a solid and nervous assertor of discriminating grace and breed well, who died Jan the 27th, 1623/4 aged 77. Reprinted by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1983.<br /><br />Susan Greenleafe and Thomas Warren in Virginia<br />Reading the history of the WARREN FAMILY, it becomes apparent that there were many marriages arranged with the sole purpose of obtaining land and titles and holding onto vast family estates. Daughters of noblemen were married off to the sons of noblemen. Women were not allowed to own much land and quite often there was no love or fidelity involved in the marriage relationship.<br />As was English law, titles and land passed to the first-born sons.<br /><br />Robert Greenleafe first arrived in Virginia in 1610. He made numerous crossings, each voyage lasting approximately three months. Ship passenger lists show that he made this treacherous voyage again in 1618 and 1620.<br />The promise of land and a new life with freedoms unrealized in England brought many thousands of desperate people to Virginia. The price of the voyage could be had by becoming an indentured servant, agreeing to work for the new landowner for a prescribed number of years.<br />Ship records show that Robert Greenleafe, aged 43, an "ancient planter" and his young wife Susan, aged 23, together with their two young children, Thomas, aged 3 and Anne, aged 22 months, landed in Virginia aboard the ship "Jonathan" in the year 1624.<br />We don't know what became of these two young children, as they are not listed on subsequent census records. Many settlers, especially the young, died of smallpox or other diseases, starvation and hardships untold. However, by the year 1635, Virginia Land Patent records show that Susan, the "relict" of Robert Greenleafe and her husband Thomas Warren were deeded 300 acres of land between them.<br />Susan Greenleafe Warren (b.1601) was approximately 39 years old when her and Thomas Warren's son JOHN R. [Richard Hodgson]<br /><br />Kt of Malta?<br />---<br />Married to Elizabeth, dau. of Sir Thomas Gresley and Anne Ferrers. He was amongst those knighted at the battle of Blackheath in 1497 [William Shaw, The knights of England, v.2 p.29].<br /><br />In 1505 he was entrusted with William Blount, lord Mountjoye with the keeping of Hampnes Castle in France.<br />[CCR v 11 Henry VII 1500-1509 ; no.226].<br /><br />In 1508 and 1513 in his will he made provision of property for his two younger brothers as it was apparent that he would leave no male heir. His feoffees included Sir John Aston, Henry Sacheveral, Ralph Delves, William and John Gresley and Ralph Leeke. He died in 1513 and his male heir under entail of the estates was his brother Ralph. Elizabeth remarried Sir John Giffard of Chillington and in 1515 they brought a suit against Ralph Montgomery for the next presentation to Cubley church. During the suit evidence was given that Sir John Montgomery had enfeoffed Edward, Lord Hastings and others in the manor and the feoffees had regranted to Sir John and Eliz his wife and heirs male of the body of Sir John. Eliz claimed to hold Cubley and the advowson for her life. The verdict was in favour of Elizabeth and Sir John Giffard. A pedigree was given with the suit showing the Montgomery succession i.e. Walter - Nicholas I - Nicholas II - Nicholas III - Nicholas IV - John<br />[The Genealogist v.20 p.161].<br />Ralph died without issue in 1517 leaving his nieces, Sir John's daughters, as coheirs.<br />Had:<br />- Ellen. Married Sir John Vernon<br />- Anne. Married John Browne of Snelston [and of Horton Kirby]<br />- Dorothy.
