Mattie L. was born in January 1896 in Rockingham Co, NC. Mattie L.'s father was George Washington Sawyers and her mother was Bertha Parsada Roberts. Her maternal grandparents were Nebuchanezer Roberts and Mary A. Floyd. She had five brothers and two sisters, named James W., Robert C., Hartly S., Roy A., Samuel M., Fannie E. and Annie B.. She was the second youngest of the eight children.General Notes
