Joseph was born in 1855 in Rockingham Co, NC.1 Joseph's father was John Roberts and his mother was Wife Unknown. His paternal grandparents were Richard Roberts and Charlotte Unknown. He had a brother and two sisters, named John H., Virginia and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the four children.
