James S. was born in 1831 in Rockingham Co, NC.1 James S.'s father was Ellis Roberts and his mother was Lydia Strong. His paternal grandparents were Cyrus L. Roberts and Eliza Unknown. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Ellis, Richard, John V., Martha, Sally and Julia A.. He was the youngest of the seven children.1 General Notes
