Alexander was born in 1859. Alexander's father was James S. Roberts and his mother was Caroline M. Joyce. His paternal grandparents were Ellis Roberts and Lydia Strong; his maternal grandfather was Martin James Joyce. He had a sister named Janie. He was the older of the two children.General Notes
