John was born about 1764 in 96 District, SC.1   John's father was Captain Samuel Kerr RWS and his mother was Mary Calhoun.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Kerr and Margaret Pickens. He had three sisters named Jane, Catherine and Ruth.  He was the oldest of the four children.  He died after August 1819 in Charleston, SC ?.1
