Martha was born in 1843 in Caswell, North Carolina, United States. Martha's father was John Foster and her mother was Jane Combs. Her paternal grandparents were John Foster and Nancy Perkins. She had six brothers and two sisters, named James B, Lorenzo Leonard, John C, William A "Uncle Buck ", Hiram C, Thomas R, Isabella and Jane Ann. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.-
