Richard was born about 1778 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia. Richard's father was Drury Overby and his mother was Amie Jones. His paternal grandfather was Nicholas Overby. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Nicholas, Daniel, Abner, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the second oldest of the seven children.-
