Ellis Melvin was born in February 1892 in Tennessee. Ellis Melvin's father was George Johnson Overbey and his mother was Nancy Elizabeth McCord. His maternal grandparents were Daniel Kinsey McCord and Nancy Lucretia L. Martin. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Herbert, Clyde, Howard, Harris, James Horace, Era Frances, Cora Dell, Elmer, Ara and Hazel. He was the oldest of the eleven children.-
