Matthew was born in 1854 in Wetzel Co., Virginia.  Matthew's father was William Anderson and his mother was Sarah Church. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Daniel, William, George Washington, Howard, Richard, James, Hannah and Nancy.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
