Harlan Ernest Youel was adoped by Anna (Phelps) and Rev. John Elton Youel at the age of 6 months from an orphanage. His birth mother was Bertha Thomas and his original name was Ernest Thomas. He was all or part Oriental. He never married.

He lived and worked for Gulf Oil (later Chevron Oil) in Pittsburgh for many years. His mother lived with him during her later years.

Harlan lived his final years in nursing home facilities in the Pittsburg area. Because of strokes, he was unable to speak. He also had heart trouble and dementia.

When Harlan died, he was cremated and buried next to his mother in the Prattsburg Rural Cemetery, Prattsburg, Pennsylvania.
