John Ela was born on July 9th, 1869 in Osceola, St. Clair, MO.1   John Ela's father was George Washington Wyatt and his mother was Mary Caroline Todd.  His maternal grandparents were James P. Todd and Mary Jane Dunaway. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James Sanders, George Washington, William Robert, Oliver, Thomas Marion, Lucy Jane, Margaret, Elizabeth Francis and Martha Louisa.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.1
