Susan Jane was born on August 10th, 1842 in Orange Co., N. C..1   Susan Jane's father was John Lindsey Woods and her mother was Margaret Allison Woods.  Her paternal grandparents were William Woods and Eleanor Lindsey; her maternal grandparents were Samuel R. Woods and Elizabeth Woods. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William Doak, Samuel Knox, John Allison, Joseph Hugh, Martha Baldridge, Mary Anne, Elizabeth Ellen and Eliza Frances Janette "Fanny".  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She had a half-sister named Nellie.  She died at 7 months old on March 18th, 1843 in Orange Co., N. C..1
