Samuel Knox was born on October 26th, 1844 in Orange Co., N. C..1 Samuel Knox's father was John Lindsey Woods and his mother was Margaret Allison Woods. His paternal grandparents were William Woods and Eleanor Lindsey; his maternal grandparents were Samuel R. Woods and Elizabeth Woods. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William Doak, John Allison, Joseph Hugh, Martha Baldridge, Mary Anne, Elizabeth Ellen, Susan Jane and Eliza Frances Janette "Fanny". He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He had a half-sister named Nellie. He died at the age of 68 in May 1913 in Orange Co., N. C..1 General Notes
