George W. was born on August 28th, 1829.1   George W.'s father was Richard Welch and his mother was Elizabeth Leach.  His paternal grandparents were Osias Welch and Betsy Harcourt. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Jesse, Richard, William, Bennett, Hail Columbia, Elizabeth, Louisiana, Mary and Martha A..  He was the second oldest of the ten children.1
