James was born about 1656 in Portsmouth, RI.1   James' father was John Tripp and his mother was Mary Paine.  His maternal grandfather was Anthony Paine. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, Peleg, Joseph, Abiel, Mary, Elizabeth, Alice, Isabel and Martha.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.  He died on May 30th, 1730.1
