Reuben was born in 1802 in Lavonia, Franklin, Georgia.1   Reuben's father was Marchant Thomas and his mother was Jemima Hamilton. He had six brothers and three sisters, named James, Jesse, Joseph, Hamilton, Isaac, Elisha, Jane, Mary Elizabeth Betsey and Catherine.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.1
