Burman was born in 1869.1   Burman's father was Elisha Thomas and his mother was Rachael Forst.  His paternal grandparents were Marchant Thomas and Jemima Hamilton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named Lincoln, Byred, Vincent, William, James, Washington, Jackson, Susan and Sarah Jane.  He was the youngest of the ten children.1
