John was born about 1868.1   John's father was Jesse C. Tatum and his mother was Louisa Surrency.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel D. Surrency and Elizabeth Kennedy. He had two brothers and four sisters, named James H., Washington, Nancy Elizabeth, Fannie Leanora, America and Sarah.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.1
