James was born on July 29th, 1897.1   James' father was Matthew Carter Smith and his mother was Victoria Brannen.  His paternal grandparents were Israel Smith and Adeline S. Carter; his maternal grandparents were Hampton Brannen and Nancy Riggs. He had three brothers and seven sisters, named Joshua, William Hampton, Lovin Erastus, Jincy, Rosa Dell, Eliza, Eugenia, Savillie Victoria, Mittie and Molly.  He was the second youngest of the eleven children. He had a half-sister named Frances Isabel.  He died at the age of 26 on April 26th, 1924.1
