Mary was born in 1835.1   Mary's father was Seth Phillips and her mother was Mary Wilder.  Her paternal grandparents were Chad Phillips and Sarah Weller. She had a brother named Edwin.  She was the younger of the two children. She had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Ephraim, Francis, George, Ira, Sarah, Lydia, Delia and Margaret.1
