Joseph was born on August 17th, 1843 in New Brunswick, Canada.1   Joseph's father was James Matthews and his mother was Elizabeth McFarland. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Thomas, Mary Ann and Jane.  He was the youngest of the six children.1
