Howard's father was John William Lewis and his mother was Columbia Cordelia Tracy. His paternal grandparents were Johnathan Harry Lewis and Martha E. Bowles; his maternal grandparents were Daniel H. Tracy and Margaret Ann Tumblin. He had three brothers and nine sisters, named Wayne, Max, Sam "Clifford", Gertrude Beryl, Nellie, Lafranchine Loretta "Doll", Eve, Persis "Margaret", Babe "Gladys", Martha, Pearl and Lewis.-
