Joan was born in 1584 in Holismerend, England.1   Joan's father was Robert Halsey and her mother was Ellen Ale. She had six brothers and a sister, named Richard, Richard, Robert, Edward, William, Thomas and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.1
