Theophilis was born in 1698 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut.1   Theophilis' father was John Goodyear and his mother was Abigail Gibbard.  His paternal grandparents were Stephen Goodyear and Margaret Lewen; his maternal grandparents were William Gibbard and Ann Tapp. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Stephen, John, Nathaniel, Andrew, Obediant, Esther and Abigail.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.1
