Wait was born on October 17th, 1730.1   Wait's father was Joseph Brown and his mother was Abiajah Whitman.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Brown and Waite Waterman; his maternal grandparents were Valentine Wightman and Sarah Bartlett. He had two sisters named Amey and Phebe. He had three half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Joseph, Benjamin, Stephen, Abigail, Martha, Amey, Deborah, Mary, Sarah and Anne.1
