Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Boyett and Matilda Holland. She had eight brothers and seven sisters, named James Coy, Jessie James, William Asberry, Benjamin Harrison "Scrap", George Washington, Julian, John, Owen, Mattie Lee, Letha Matilda, Queen, Frances Gertrude, Mertie, Freddie and Ruth.
