Samuel Jacob Booker was adoped by Benjamin Sears after his mother died and was taken to Illinois. He enlisted in Company G, 70th Illinois Volunteer Infantry at Camp Point, Illinois. He served during the Civil War until December 1862, when he became ill and was placed in the Field Hospital at New Haven, Kentucky. He was later moved to Louisville, Kentucky and in March 1863, he was brought to Quincy, Illinois. He was discharged from service on April 16, 11863, and went home to Paloma, Illinois, where he died on July 14, 1863 as a result of his war service.
