James was born on August 7th, 1850.1   James' father was William Allen Baird and his mother was Margaret Annetta McNeel. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel McNeel, William Allen, Jane, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.1
