Mourning was born in Albemerle Co, Va.¹ Mourning's father was James Adams and her mother was Cecily. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Adams and Mourning Lewis. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named James, Robert, Thomas, Richard, John, Charles, William, Millie, Nancy, Sallie and Sookie.¹
