J W was born in 1814 in Itawamba, Mississippi, USA.1 J W's father was Absalum Mauldin and his mother was Cynthia Caroline Seale. His paternal grandparents were John Mauldin and Sarah Blake. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William Melton, Harris, Clayton, Sarah, Jane, Martha, Mary and Mary Jackson. He was the oldest of the nine children.
