Sion was born in 1760 in Nash Co., NC.1 Sion's father was David D Cooper and his mother was Elizabeth Wilder. His paternal grandparents were Marcom Cooper and Sarah Cooper. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Marcome, William, John Cotten, Malachia, Edward Ned, Rehab, Charity, Oprah and Elizabeth. He was the fourth youngest of the ten children. He had a half-sister named Sarah Juliet.-
